How Digital Marketing Helped Me Stop Trusting Job Security

I though about writing this post on how digital marketing helped me stop trusting job security really because it came from my own experience and learning the hard way that a job is not always the safety net we think it is.

Let’s face it — most of us born in the 60s and 70s were brought up to believe that a job was for life and would secure our retirement.

I thought if I worked hard, stayed loyal, and did everything right, that would count for something.

But when I was made redundant for the second time, I realised how quickly that sense of security can disappear.

That experience changed the way I looked at work, income, and what it really means to have options.

Retirement is getting closer, and I knew I needed a solid back-up plan I could rely on.

And as my mum’s full-time carer, getting another job was not really an option either.

For all of those reasons, I decided to start building something of my own through digital marketing.

I Thought My Job Was Safe Too

At the time, I genuinely believed I was doing everything I was supposed to do.

I was working hard, doing my job properly, and trying to be reliable.

Like a lot of people, I assumed that if you showed up, did the right thing, and stayed loyal, that would give you some kind of protection.

But redundancy has a way of showing you that business decisions are not always personal — and they are not always fair either.

Sometimes companies change direction, restructure, downsize, or get taken over.

And when that happens, your security can disappear very quickly, no matter how hard you have worked.

The truth is, no one in a job is completely irreplaceable.

What Redundancy Taught Me

Redundancy taught me something I do not think I fully understood before.

A job can feel secure right up until the moment it isn’t.

You can work hard, stay loyal, and do everything you can — and still find yourself in a position you never expected.

That does not mean working for someone else is wrong.

But it did make me realise how risky it can be to have all of your income, security, and future tied to one source.

It also made me think much more seriously about having another option in place, even if it started small.

So I made the decision to focus my time on learning how to build something of my own, with the help of a mentor or two.

I am not suggesting everyone should throw in the towel and walk away from their job, because for many people that simply is not realistic.

But building something alongside your current job, in your spare time, is another story.

Why Digital Marketing Became My Answer to Job Security Fears

Digital marketing appealed to me because it felt like a way to start building something for myself without needing to create a product from scratch, rent premises, or turn my whole life upside down.

I needed something flexible.

Something I could learn from home.

Something I could build around my responsibilities rather than constantly trying to squeeze my life around somebody else’s schedule.

That mattered even more because I am my mum’s full-time carer, so going back into a more traditional working setup was not straightforward for me.

I also came to realise that learning digital skills is useful in more ways than one. It is not just about building something of your own online — it is also about giving yourself skills that can strengthen your future options and create more job security in a changing world.

Digital marketing gave me another option to work towards — one that felt more realistic for my life and more aligned with the future I wanted to build.

Even though I was scared, it all felt completely unrealistic, and I had no real idea what I was doing or whether it would work, I knew I had to take it seriously and believe in myself for a change.

Why I No Longer Rely on Job Security Alone

I no longer see job security in the same way I once did.

That does not mean I think traditional work has no value, or that everyone should walk away from employment.

But I do believe there is real value in having another path you are building for yourself.

Something that is yours.
Something you are learning.
Something that gives you a bit more control over your future.

For me, that mindset shift has mattered just as much as the business side of digital marketing itself.

When you stop relying on one source alone, you start thinking differently.

You stop feeling quite so trapped.

And even if it starts small, having another option can change the way you look at your future.

Want a Simpler Place to Start?

If any of this has hit home for you, and you know you need another option rather than putting all your trust in one path, this free Affiliate Marketing Skills Mastermind training program is what helped me start making more sense of digital marketing than anything else I’ve seen or read.

It’s taught by my mentor, and it gave me a much clearer idea of what matters, what doesn’t, and how to stop spinning my wheels.

More importantly, it helped me start seeing a path forward that felt realistic for my life and responsibilities.
